The story behind this special whisky began with Masataka Taketsuru (1894-1979), who was one of Japan’s first Western-style brewers and distillers. After studying chemistry in Scotland, he returned home to continue his research on how to make better sake–and eventually came up with an innovative method using rice instead of barley as the base ingredient (he later married another Scottish woman). Inspired by this success, Taketsuru decided he wanted something similar but different: something uniquely Japanese that could capture both tradition while also showing off modernity through innovation–and thus began what would become Hibiki Harmony!
