hibiki 17

When most people think of Japanese whisky, they probably think of Yamazaki and Hakushu, two brands from Suntory. While those are very good whiskies, there’s another one that deserves your attention: Hibiki 17 Year Old. This is a blended whiskey made by Suntory in Japan. It was first released in 1988 and was created by Japanese master distiller Shinji Fukuyo. Hibiki 17 is bottled at a higher proof than most Japanese whiskies, at approximately 43% ABV (86 Proof). The whisky is aged for at least 17 years in American oak barrels before being released for sale worldwide each year around October or November.

Hibiki 17 is an extremely complex and full-bodied blend of malt whiskies with grain whiskies from Suntory’s Yamazaki Distillery, which has been operating since 1923; Hakushu Distillery (founded 1966); and Chita Grain Whisky Research Center (opened 2001). The malt component includes malts aged between 10 years and 30 years old, while the grain components are aged between 5 years old to 8 years old.

A master distiller is responsible for overseeing the entire production of whiskey at their distillery, which includes overseeing all of the processes involved in making it (including fermentation and aging).

Hibiki 17 is different from other Japanese whiskies because it’s aged longer than most–about twice as long as most other Japanese whiskies are aged–and has a higher percentage of malt to grain than any other Hibiki blend. This means that while you’ll still get some spicy notes from the grain, they’ll be balanced out by sweeter flavors from malted barley added during fermentation.

The whisky is aged for at least 17 years in American oak barrels.

Like most Scotch whiskies, Hibiki 17 is aged in American oak barrels, which are more porous than European ones. This allows more of the wood’s flavor to be absorbed into the whisky while it ages. While Hibiki 17’s aging process takes place in warehouses located in Yamazaki, Japan, the majority of its components are imported from Scotland and Ireland (including barley malt and various grains).

Japanese whisky has become increasingly popular over the past few years thanks to its lighter taste profile compared to traditional Scotch whiskies–but don’t be fooled: there’s nothing watered down about this one! The blend was carefully crafted using only premium ingredients; each bottle contains at least 17 years worth of experience behind it…and we think you should give it a try yourself!
