What is the Louis XIII Black Pearl?
The Louis XIII Black Pearl is a Classifying member of the Paul Gaultier ‘Designer Series’. It is also a Parfum creation with notes of pralines, coffee, vanilla and dried figs. A relatively new addition to the fragrance world, this particular creation was first released in 2016.
Created by perfumer Jean-Claude Malle, the Louis XIII Black Pearl is bottled at 40% and costs approximately $275 for a 50ml bottle. Officially launched in 2016, this parfum was inspired by eighteenth century French royals and their penchant for sweet-tasting fragrances that enhanced their natural aromas. The idea behind this scent is that it should be layered and worn as an alluring aroma rather than being overpowering or cloying.
As expected from a Jean-Claude Malle composition, the Louis XIII is surprisingly intricate with numerous layers of sweetness and spice. What starts off as an invigorating burst of coffee grounds evolves into an ethereal quality as fresh vanilla essences are added. Underlying everything is a dense layer of blackberry sauce – something which imparts warmth both physically and emotionally. This is combined with delicate notes of figs and dried cherries; all of which form an unforgettable blend that lingers on the skin long after application has ceased.
Origins of the Louis XIII Black Pearl
The Louis XIII was actually discovered in the Caribbean in 1726. This precious gem began its journey from the Caribbean to France in 1728, aboard the ship La Concorde d’Or. The ship stopped in Saint Domingue (present day Haiti) where it was traded for fresh fruit and vegetables. The pearls made their way to France on June 10th, 1728 and were immediately sold to a Parisian jeweler named M. André-Bardin. Then, on January 1st, 1729, Monsieur Bardin presented Princess Palatine with a necklace containing thirteen pearls encrusted with diamonds totaling 958 livres tournois (approximately $142,000 today).
Interestingly enough, one of the pearls that Princess Palatine wore at her official baptismal ceremony was later recovered from Versailles after being missing for two centuries! The whereabouts of the other ten pearls are unknown but they are assumed to still be residing in some part of Europe.
The extravagance and rarity of the Louis XIII soon drew attention from all corners of Europe. As word spread about this unique gemstone, many eager buyers started bidding up the price for this treasure. In fact, by 1753, one pearl alone was worth an astonishing £104 5s 6d (approximately $1 million today)!
But despite its prestige and value, the popularity of the
